The Nigerian Communications Commission NCC has released the latest Internet Subscriber Data for the months of September and October and the stats is not looking good good for both Global System for Mobile Communication (GSM) and Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) Internet Service Providers/Networks in the country.
With the exception of Airtel, Multilinks and Globacom, all other providers lost active subscribers/users. MTN lost 306,408 subscribers, Etisalat lost 369,158 and Visafone 13,664. Airtel and Multilinks remained steady with no gains or losses and Globacom gained over 290,000 “new” active subscribers.
The tables below shows an approximate breakdown of the data for GSM and CDMA networks. For detailed graphs and data visit NCC.
With several tech companies creating services dependent on active subscribers having access to good and affordable internet service, these numbers should be welcomed with apprehension.
Is the current economy situation to blame?. Even with reassurances from the NCC on the suspension of the Directive on Data Segment Price Floor, we look into the new year hoping for better implementation of economic and regulatory policies.
